At least one of the voices in my head is saying that it might not be the best idea to pull the trigger on this release when I'm this exhausted. All I have to do is send the mail announcing that the beta is available, but it's a new product, and a lot of sfik is riding on doing it right. I can wait until morning.

Applause on your use of sfik, though I doubt that word will make the transition to mainstream usage as successfully as, say, grok.

(and this reminds me of the time I said, loudly, while walking back to my desk, "Sure, I'll check in a major change at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?")

ARGH LJ IS NOT MY FRIEND TODAY

(apologies for all the inevitable emails for my edits. I should have left well enough alone. Third time's the charm...)

If I've grokked the term correctly (yep, grok is all mainstream) I've heard the word 'juice' used in a similar context. Or, less dramatically, 'cred', though that's not nearly as fun or visceral and doesn't usually entail life and death. ;-/

But, see, if you actually *say* it, then doesn't that reverse the curse and then nothing will go wrong because you called it? Like bringing an umbrella to ensure that it doesn't rain?
also, now obligatory icon squeeeeeee

I guess the closest analog to sfik would be "cred", with a fair amount of "status" mixed in. And in the source (the Chanur series by C.J. Cherryh), it did entail life and death for the particularly unpleasant aliens whose word it was.

Now, see, if I'd said "Sure, even though I just know it'll break the nightly build and all the tests will fail over the weekend and everyone will yell at me on Monday morning!", that would be reversing the curse. What I said was more like daring the Universe to fuck me over good and hard. (Which, as it turned out, it did not.)

You should. They are some of her best work, and I at least believe that is saying something.

That's one of the great things about you -- the voices in your head are smart and responsible. Mine are always encouraging me to do stupid things...
