It took four years, but I rose through the ranks from conchair to gopher.
Even in fandom, people often don't realize how dynamic the power structure of a con-running organization really is (or should be). We're not all striving to be chairmain. It's an important job, but it's one job out of many. It's not necessarily the most interesting job, or even the most work. (My hat is permanently off to
roozle for her work on Programming.) There's a reason the Boskone committee greets its new chairman with "Hello, Sucker!".
In the five Arisias preceding this one, I was conchair once, assistant conchair twice, and division head twice. This weekend, I wore no ribbons. I worked a few hours at registration on Friday. I worked a few hours at art show on Sunday. You have no idea how liberating it felt, to spend the rest of my time wandering around like regular people, attending panels, browsing the art show and dealers room, catching up with friends from near and far -- and talking about what I should work on at Worldcon. I'm doomed.
