Yike. Cancer seems to be the word of the day.

I just got mail that someone I knew from the bike ride died of leukemia on New Years Eve.

Bert was a big, quiet, friendly, and patient and placid as a buddha. His idea of a bike was a Harley, so he didn't cycle with us, but he wanted to be with his wife Pat as she cycled across the country, and he paid full fare for the privilege of riding in the support van, hanging out at the sag stops, sleeping at the Days Inn, and eating at the Golden Corral. He was recently retired, and claimed his idea of a good time was sitting on his porch, watching the tide go out. And come back in.

(Pat, by the way, kicked serious butt. The only time I rode with her was when she was feeling sick. Did I mention she's 65?)

Anyway, the news was this: "They had been able to enjoy a great couple of weeks in the east after our trip and also took a cruise in Alaska. In October, he began complaining about headaches and after 12 tranfusions, it was discovered he had the cancer. On December 31, Bert DiBasilio passed away of Leukemia."

For all the pictures I took, I don't have many that include Bert. A good one of Pat and Bert is here. There's another one I like, that doesn't show Bert in much detail, but does show him, sitting buddha-like, at a sag stop in a cemetary.

In other cycling news, my buddy Dan wants to be "one of first one legged idiots to cycle around Australia." I pointed him at a 3-part series in the National Geographic in 1997-98 about a guy who did just this (albeit with 2 legs). He logged over 10,000 miles in 9 months.
