Kylie and I went for a nice bike ride yesterday (almost 14 miles - the farthest she's ever gone), and discovered quantities of Yummy Stuff.
First there were the mushrooms. I'd actually noticed it before, as it's at the side of the road, on the way to school. Once you know what it is, it's hard to miss that quantity of Laetiporus sulphureus. Sulfur Shelf. Chicken of the Woods. It's called that because it...tastes like chicken. The larger cluster (first photo) weighed in at 7½ pounds, and wrapped about a quarter of the way around the tree. We didn't bother to take the smaller cluster (prob. 3-4 lbs), because that would have been greedy. One paper grocery bag full of mushrooms is enough.
David Aurora says that l. sulphureus doesn't dry well (it become tough and leathery), so I sauteed and froze it. All. 7½ pounds. Oy. Phil and Vicka can expect to get some, oh yes.
Second stop - Concord grapes. To find Concord grapes, you just have to keep your nose open. When they're ripe, the smell is strong and unmistakable. We were biking on a dirt road through the state forest, came out into a clearing, and stopped dead. We had to sniff around for a few minutes to find the vines, which covered a couple small trees and blackberry bushes (ouch). We ate our fill, filled a water bottle with grapes, and came back later with a plastic bag. 4½ pounds. Kylie wants to make jam.
