horsey stuff
Jul. 23rd, 2006 11:48 pmYesterday, I had my first riding lesson in at least 10 years. I guess you could say I'm taking
alabastard's place in the adult lesson, together with
lyonesse,
iabervon, and
gatewaygirl. I was on Indy, a bright-green, fresh-off-the-track ex-racer. He's nice, but he's no way a schoolie, and he's going to take some work to get there. Like, he bit a kid last week, and lunged at another kid. He pinned his ears at me when I was brushing him, and raised his back leg as if to kick me - so i kicked him in the upraised leg, and told him to knock it off. But I'm not a 10 year old girl just learning to ride. I've dealt with a range of "project" horses over the years, and I'm certainly willing to work with Indy for our mutual improvement, but I wonder at the wisdom of using him as a lesson horse for beginners.
Today, I had my usual Sunday trail ride with Cheyenne. Cut it short, because the deerflies were implacable, despite the bug spray. I need to get him a fly mask, or at least an ear net. State Line has a nice looking hand-crocheted cotton (therefore not likely to last long) ear net on sale for $4.
After a lot of thought, I decided to take up the half lease on Cheyenne, starting in August. He really needs the work, since his other leaser left in June to become a real cowboy in New Mexico. Now I just need to decide which two weekdays I'm nominally (or even actually) riding.
Laine, the barn owner, got trampled a couple weeks ago. No, I didn't LJ it at the time. I understand there was copious blood, and the doctor ordered a second set of x-rays, becuase he couldn't believe her leg wasn't broken. Anyway, she was down in the barn feeding the horses for the first time when Kylie and I biked by this evening. The doctor doesn't want her doing barn work, but this is her business as well as her life. And she wants to ride on Friday. What can you possibly say?
