This evening we watched Kylie's baby tape. It begins in the hospital, when she's 3 days old, stick thin, bright red, hooked up to a ventilator and all sorts of monitors. It ends when she's about 18 months old, and walking. She's 10 now, and has seen pictures of herself, but this may be the first time she's seen the tape.

Kylie noticed, besides the changes in herself, the greater and lesser changes in the house - different flooring, different furniture, different pets. Me, I'm slightly grayer now, and slightly pudgier, but I'm otherwise static. My hair is the same length and the same lack of style, and I not only still dress the same, but I still own and wear most of the clothes in the tape. In a couple scenes, I'm wearing the very same shirt I have on right now. Imagine yourself 10 years from now. Unless you have some grand plan for your life, you're probably going to picture yourself pretty much as you are, surrounded by the same people, engaged in the same activities. Usually the winds of fate blow you one way or another, but sometimes they don't, and Newton's First Law just carries you along. I like the life I'm leading, but I'm a bit surprised at the lack of surprise.

The other thing that struck me was the sound of my own voice. I don't hear it frequently, but when I do, I think I ought to shut up more often.
