The jack-o-lantern sat on the porch until it rotted and fell over. Forgotten, its body lay unburied, sprawled grotesquely under the snow. But its spirit could not rest. Now it has risen, and seeks to entangle the unwary.
We had a similar experience with a pumpkin. We left it in place through the winter (it snowed before we had a chance to move it). In the Spring it sprouted. We moved it to a "safe" place, but then it got eatten by a ground hog.
