Today I started volunteering at Nevins Farm, the MSPCA farm in Methuen. It's something I've been thinking about doing for quite a while, and the time was right. (Busy, high-profile time at work; just ramping up for Arisia, where I'm not only doing the Souvenir Book again, but I've also taken on the Pocket Program. So, yeah, the perfect time to take on another new commitment.)

The morning started with turning out the horses, mucking the stalls, filling the water buckets - basic horse maintenance. One horse was going home this morning, and that was kind of exciting.

Then I helped move some chickens from the quarantine area down to the main poultry barn. The new batch included one ginormous oven-roaster rooster, and we watched him for a while, establishing his place in the pecking order against mostly bantam roosters. Clipped the rice-a-roni-like nails on the new silkies, who had only ever lived on soft bedding. There was a black and green bantam cochin cockerel who didn't believe he had wings, so made no attempt to get away when I was holding him. Eventually I got tired of the chickens-is-practically-falcons joke, and proceeded to the pirate-chicken joke (perched on my shoulder), which was fine until he crapped down my back.

I hadn't really planned to work a full 8-hour day, after getting into work at 1pm, but that's what happened. On the whole, I'd rather deal with the literal shit than the other kind.
