700 chickens and ducks

I came in for my Friday morning shift at Nevins farm to find about 500 chickens and 200 ducks from a recent seizure. There are 100 chickens in the regular quarantine area in the hay loft, plus four horse stalls full of chickens. The ducks are in two large stalls with turnout. They haven't been fully counted yet, and the staff are just starting on the blood tests.

(To show what I'm like in the morning, I was cleaning a horse stall for about 10 minutes before I noticed the stall next to me was filled with chickens. They were quiet, and I was oblivious.)

What I heard at the barn is that they were being raised for the Chinese restaurant trade. Beyond that, I don't know if it was a licensed poultry farm that was just badly run, or a backyard operation that got out of hand. Law enforcement isn't generally called in unless there are complaints of abuse or neglect. In any case, there was apparent neglect, given that they found about 100 dead birds under the live birds.

I am having a really hard time imagining you THAT out of it to not *hear* THAT many chickens!! Wow! That is a miasm of cluckiness. And, from what the MSPCA article said, a rather aromatic one as well.

Catered the Grey2K annual dinner in Canton last night, and thought of your sweet dog. Josie was the name of the one they had there last night. Oh, such a sweetie!

Back to the chikcens....so am I to assume that I can drop off a check to the Nevins Farm on my way past there, so as to help feed the cluckers and quackers?

There are often chickens in the quarantine area of the hay loft, so I've gotten used to hearing the occasional chicken sounds in the barn. And that's all there was from this lot - unusually quiet. They were cleaned up and in clean quarters, so not stinky either. Beyond that, I can't defend myself...

Good for you, and good for her! Our Josie just turned 14, which is quite an accomplishment. She's an old lady, but she's not dead yet (as we frequently remind her).

Thank you! They'll appreciate it. The barn is open to the public Tues-Sat 11-4, but there are usually staff there from 8:30-4:30 7 days a week.
