Spent most of the last day spinning my wheels on local network issues.

I have cable modem service, with a router/NAT/DHCP/WAP/firewall thingie to serve the house network. Last night, the router stopped propagating the DNS settings to the DHCP clients, and everyone was unhappy. That was eventually sorted, but it seemed like a good time to switch to the new integrated cable modem/router thingie that I had coincidentally just ordered. An hour and a half on the phone with Comcast and Linksys support, and another long while dicking around on my own, got me to a state where I had a couple computers connected, but a couple others weren't getting addresses at all. Plus the WCG200-CC (branded for "Comcast Home Networking") has a severely lobotomized configuration utility - e.g. I couldn't set the network prefix, or reserve a fixed address for the printer. Also, the two-antenna wireless-G seemed to provide worse coverage than the old single-antenna wireless-B.

So that goes back in the box, and I'm back on the phone with Comcast to re-enable the old modem. Sigh. Upgraded the router firmware, reconfigured, and it still won't propagate DNS to DHCP clients, but does seem to running a DNS proxy resolver, so at least it seems to be working with all the old equipment in place.
