Why is it that the things that seem intractably fucked, that I just can't bring myself to deal with, turn out to be not so bad; while the things that seem like they ought to be simple turn out to be intractably fucked?

As to the former, I find that the mental barriers I put up once a problem looks hard are often far worse than any actual problem. So once I get over the mental block I've actually dealt with the hard part, and it's all downhill. As to the latter, "nothing is ever simple"?
