One of my side projects has been to lay out the Worldcon Restaurant Guide. Jo Walton did the vast majority of the research and the writing over in [livejournal.com profile] antici_food, and I just had to make it look pretty and polished.

For the cover, I had a vague idea about borrowing [livejournal.com profile] sunspiral's Hugo rocket, and insinuating that into one or more table settings, but the concept never gelled, and circumstances conspired against my actually getting ahold of the rocket. But while idly googling photos of Montréal restaurants, I kept coming on pics of poutine, and I knew what I had to do.

And now I have to try the stuff myself...

That's pretty awesome.

I actually just emailed Jo Walton to ask if she'd consider being in Where I Write. I had no idea you two knew one another.

Never met her, but we have mutual friends, who happen to be throwing a con where she lives. I look forward to meeting her, and to eating my way through Montreal.

You're probably busy, but I'd like to buy you a drink too.

Okay, then it's a plan. Or at least it will be when it's planned.

Very nice.

Super minor point... The food is in the sun and you missed the relfection in the face plate.

Argh, after staring at the original (http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/GPN-2001-000013.html), I think you're right.

On close inspection, his left arm and glove are visible in the lower right of the face plate. Therefore, so must be the poutine. (Even if it was in shade, it would be reflected, like his glove.)

The thing I spent time on was matching the light and shadows (which I think I got right), and the noise (less successful, as Photoshop provides a finer-grained noise than that of the original pic (but it's only barely noticeable at the larger size)). There should also be a cross-hair, but it's right in the middle of the poutine, very distracting, so I left it out.

When I did the pic, I studied the reflection of Aldrin's shadow, before deciding that a plate held directly in front of him wouldn't affect it. Missed the direct reflection...
