Yes, very Buddhist! Suffering comes from one's beliefs, rather than external events. Physical pain has pretty much nothing to do with it.
Of course, as the Buddha also discovered, we need to respect our physical body's needs for health (he didn't become enlightened until he stopped fasting and ate some food).
But most people are like that woman, scared of being fully alive and enlightened and free, so they stay "safe" and unhappy and lame and mostly just get in the way of the creative, passionate, alive folks.
