Guess what we did this morning.

(Sadly, our own bushes have been a total bust this year. These are from Turkey Hill Farm in Haverhill.)

And then we went to Nevins Farm to look at the button quail (properly, coturnix quail).

Here's a gray one. They're really quite wee.

And of course we had to visit the chickenerie.

Some young hippie with a leghorn rooster.

Some old hippie with an Americauna pullet.

And the duck who couldn't be bothered to get up for anything.

we quite like our one leghorn. She's a mighty producer of large white eggs and not at all as flighty as we had been told she would be. Tomorrow I add 5 new ones to the coop, 3 more ameraucanas and 2 cochins

chickens are cheap, easy, and fun...and it is quite possible to go away for a weekend and have no problems with them. Backyard Chickens for Dummies is actually quite good, written by the guy who started backyardchickens.com

good to know the book.

raised ducks successfully for ages, so other than a body of water, i imagine it's a little similar. ours were "free range". they were everywhere on the property.
