So I did the Merrimac River Trail Race this morning. 10 miles in 1:28:01, which I'm well pleased with. Route details here - out and back along the Merrimac River, mostly flat for the first 3 miles, then some challenging hills (and then you have to go right back over them in the other direction).

Legs are fine, but I got a couple blisters on one foot, and a painful rash on the inner thighs, where my legs (still) rub together. Oh right, this is why I don't wear a kilt more often. Time to try different shorts, and/or compression underwear, and/or prophylactic applications of diaper cream.

I'll never be a Contender, but I know how to dial in a pace that I can stick with, so I'm pretty confident I can do the half marathon in a couple weeks (30% longer, but 65% less elevation gain, and 100% fewer rocks, roots, and stream crossings).

That's much better than I can do.

Last fall I went a history walk along part of that trail. It was interesting and a pleasant walk.

So, yeah, actually I am going to revise my prediction that you would be running full marathons within the year, because I think it will be considerably sooner than that...

Silly question, but is it horse-friendly?

As always, context is everything...

Maybe. I know I have a limit - everyone does - but I don't know where it is yet. (But I'm willing to find out. :)

One thing I won't be doing 3 weeks from now is the Seven Sisters Trail Race (http://7sisterstrailrace.com/) in Amherst, which is only 12 miles - over the ridgeline of the Mount Holyoke range. It's notorious even among dedicated trail runners.

It's an AVIS (http://www.avisandover.org/) property. They don't explicitly allow or prohibit horses (that I've been able to find), but they do prohibit bikes on all properties, so I suspect they're anti-horse.

I don't even have to visualize the smirk - it's there in the icon. ;)

Bike shorts, man, bike shorts.

No, really. Get ones without too much or any padding. It's totally the way to go. I haven't owned a bathing suit since I started wearing bike shorts when I started biking long distances as a teenage boy. All the chafing just goes away.
