Tuesday the equine dentist was at the barn to work on 6 of the horses. Gemi has "old horse mouth", with some molars worn to the point that they're not doing much of anything, one or two dead teeth (but not loose, so they get to stay), and one with a big chunk missing, down to the gum line. OTOH, the x-rays didn't show any internal or root problems, so no major intervention needed. Maybe a bit of tea tree oil on the gums, and continue to experiment with her feed.
Yesterday, Kylie had her wisdom teeth out. All 4 impacted, unerupted, but close to the surface. Two of them came out intact, two had to be cut apart, but pretty uneventful overall. She got to take them home as souvenirs; would you like pictures?
Today was my regular 6-month cleaning, but really uneventful. I've finally learned good oral hygiene, although I keep breaking bits of my molars, like icebergs calving off a glacier.

Date: 2014-06-05 08:52 pm (UTC)There is a wonderful 31 year old mare at Sheriffmuir, Pyrha, who gets fed mushy wet hay cubes about 6 times a day, along with some easy to chew senior feed. (I remember Joc using the Poulin brand with Minnie; it was "puffed" so it was very easy to chew.) Pyrha is in fabulous shape; she is no longer ridden, but her owner visits every day to groom her, take her for a walk, and let her roll in the indoor.
