frobzwiththingz and Knoppix, I managed to save a good deal of the data from my dead laptop drive. However, there were grindy noises even then, and many bad blocks were found when I was finally able to do a low-level check.
I installed the new hard drive in the Microcenter parking lot this morning, and starting running the "System Restore" on the way in to work. Mmm, installing Windows at 65mph in the driving rain, that's life on the edge. Swapping CDs wasn't bad, but trying to type under those conditions was...challenging.
