I just got my new scanner, so I can finally show this piece off. Frank Wu, Arisia Artist Guest of Honor, scribbled this in my program book (on the page about him, naturally):

I should also point out that he somehow didn't have a pen when he got to his autograph session, so he did the whole session with my pens. Of course, driving him to the airport on Sunday afternoon, it emerged that he packed all his artwork, interleaved with his laundry, in two large suitcases that he bought the day before the con. Nice guy, really nice guy, but a bit disorganized.

Hmmm...

I guess the H.M.S. Selkirk was the escort ship to the H.M.S. Thunder Child.

That so totally rocks. :) What kind of scanner did you get? ;)

Canon LiDE 500F, $130 list. It doesn't have the top-level resolution of some of the $100 scanners (Epson Perfection 3490 is apparently top of that class), and it can only scan one negative at a time. But it uses LEDs instead of a lamp, so there's no warm-up time, and it's powered through the USB cable. I can't count the number of power bricks on the computer desk at home, so this matters to me. It's also slim, portable, and very stylin'. I read a user review by a journalist who takes it to the library with him, instead of using the library copier. I wouldn't have thought of that, but it's cool that you can do it.

Scanners

I use a cheap-oh HP scanner I got for less than 100 bucks. It takes three swipes to warm up correctly when I'm scanning a painting, which overhangs the the tiny scanner so I hold the painting down with big chunks of petrified wood from Oregon.

(petrified wood varies from area to area - the Arizona stuff that's most common has lots of deep color (reddish-browns), but generally there's been so much replacement, you lose the grain and cell structure; petrified wood from Calistoga springs area, California, is redwood, but has actually lost the original color so it's white (white redwood, as it were), but retains all the biological detail; Oregon petrified wood is nice 'cos you get good color (browns of varying shades) AND retain the wood grain).

Yes, Oregon petrified wood, an essential artist's tool. Now ya know.

Disorganized?

I'm disorganized? OK, maybe just a little.

Hey - it was a fabulous con. Totally fun. Wonderful in every way, and I was totally treated like royalty the whole time. You guys are swell. *Sniff* *Sniff*

Do you happen to know if anyone got any photos of the Dueling Easels?

There was a photographer there. I don't know if he was an official Arisia photographer or not.

I take it, Marlin, that you don't know who it was that was taking fotos? I'd really like to get fotos of dueling easels - that was the most fun I've had in a long long time, even when I pulled my shoulder out, which gave me a... challenge.

Lenny Provenzano was the "official" newsletter photographer. I think he gave copies of everything to Skip; I'll talk to him and see what (if anything) Arisia is doing with the pictures. Certainly you should get any pictures of yourself.

Cool. If Lenny (or anyone else who has photos) could email them to me at FWu@FrankWu.com that would be absolutely wonderful. Yeah!
