The background on my home machine is a picture I took on my bike trip, which I titled "Barn. Or Not." Trust me that it looks even better in a full-screen size. Actually, it looks really boss. It's an accident that it's framed as well as it is, given that the viewscreen on my digi-cam is all but invisible in bright sunlight.

KDE has a button to hide all open windows, so you can see your desktop. It was probably intended to make it easy to lauch apps from destop icons, but everyone knows it's really for admiring your beautiful background.

Oh my god, that is so beautiful. The mountains look positively unreal. The lake, the trees, the house, the contrast of the eternal and the ephemeral, it's all perfect.

Last summer, my roommate and riding buddy Andy made fun of me for my fascination with abandonded buildings. So at one point, I wrote a short essay (http://www.psgd.org/bike/day22.html) to articulate at least part of the appeal.

thanks!

i completely lucked out on that, just driving by and the light was perfect.

that's a good explanation... i also find that it ties into my fascination with the surrealist artists, since it's all about the contrast of the unexpected object, frequently juxtaposing natural / unnatural aspects. magritte is all over that.

So much of life is just like that. Of course, it helps that you're open to the moment when it arrives.

That's really cool! Any chance I could have a URL to the original-size photo (or you could mail it to me) so it can be my background too?

Okay, I just made a link to the <A href="http://www.psgd.org/psgd/pix/barn-or-not.jpg>1024x768</A> version that I'm using as my background. The original was something like 1600x1200, but it's on a machine that's not currently booted.
