calling you

Last night after aikido, I had dinner (more like "snorted pasta", since I got there late) with [livejournal.com profile] lyonesse and [livejournal.com profile] sensesurfer, and watched Bagdad Cafe. Great film, except I kept trying to remember where I'd heard the title song ("Calling You", sung by Jevetta Steele). Eventually (like two hours after it ended), I figured out that it was covered by Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra.

Music aside, it got me wondering what other worthwhile films I've been missing. Quirky is good, foreign is not a problem, emotional depth is more important than action, and it's a bonus if it passes the Bechdel Test - in short, something that won't waste my time or brain cells.

Well, next week [livejournal.com profile] lyonesse and [livejournal.com profile] iabervon are coming over to watch Antonia's Line at our house. I guarantee it passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors. :)

PS - There are major spoilers in the wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonia%27s_Line), but they confirm my diagnosis. Wanna come join us?

I've lately been seized with a desire to re-watch "Night on Earth", the one about the taxi rides. That was similarly weird, like Bagdad Cafe.
