Given that a) I don't own any firearms, and b) this is a chunk of maple, my plan is to scrape off the engraved part of the plaque, and use it as a cutting board. Or if the engraved bit is heat-resistant, just use it as a hot pad.

It's not that I object to a bit of executive recognition, but this was given to every member of the engineering organization, regardless of their role or contribution to this release. It's so de-personalized as to be meaningless. It's also incredibly unimaginative. Anyone who thinks programmers put any value on a plaque hasn't spent enough time with programmers.

So yeah, props to us, but I'm going to make my own value out of this prop.

How big is it? Is it big enough to make into a mini-whiteboard? Those can be useful. Also, there's magnetic chalkboard paint.

(I think the cutting board is a god idea but I worry about toxic finishes.)

Yup. Probably some kinda-hip kinda-now kinda-wow junior exec hotshot came up with the idea and has little clue about what folks really care about. Either that or they own the plaque company too.

Maybe you could borrow the "wind river brand" to personalize it.

Yeah, scraping off the engraved part to make a hotplate sounds good- or i bet we know people who could rout designs into another thin piece of aluminum to glue over the top, for a decorative hotplate.
