moonlight ride
May. 20th, 2008 12:56 amJeez, has it been a month since I posted? Let's pretend that nothing has happened, because that's close enough to the truth.
Tonight was the first moonlight ride of the year. In past months, the weather didn't cooperate, or the full moon fell on a holiday, or some such. But the sky cleared around sunset at 8:04, and the horses were tacked and ready to go by 8:45. Of course, the moon didn't rise until 9:13, and was just starting to clear the trees when we returned about an hour later. So, moonlight ride with not a lot of moon, but better than moonlight ride with no moon.
I was elected to lead, probably because Cheyenne and I know the trails better than anyone other than the barn owner. It was a short out-and-back, to avoid going over the Bridge of Suck (plywood patches installed over a year ago, and it's sprouting new holes, holes the size of...say...a horse's foot). We walked the whole way out (checking trail conditions, and waiting for the moon to get a little higher), then trotted most of the way back. Today's wind dropped a sizeable tree right across the main trail, so it was good we scouted it. All in all a fine ride, even if Mr. Go wanted to go farther and faster (and doesn't he always?).
