Today I rejoin the ranks of the employed, working for ISC. They seem like a good bunch, and they offered me what I was making at Wind River, which is frankly more than I thought I could get from a public-benefit company. I'll also be working from home, which gives me back the 70-90 minutes I was spending in the car each day, to say nothing of the gas. I just need to carve out the physical, temporal, and mental work space, so I get the right work/non-work split. For the last 8 years or so, I've been working either on solo projects, or with people in other sites, so I'm used to remote collaboration. But even then, I was expected to show up in the office most of the time. It should be fine, it's just a change.

I was laid off February 6, officially "separated" from Wind River February 20, and I've really been enjoying having the time off. It's the longest I've been without work since graduating high school, 26 years ago. I wouldn't have minded having the rest of the summer off, but we have some big-ticket expenses coming up (new car, new floor for the dining room and possibly kitchen), and the company probably has things they want me to do. Of course, right now I'm just filling out paperwork, setting up a new linux box, clearing space for it, and waiting for my boss to wake up.

ISC provides a home for a few packages that aren't under active development, but aren't dead yet. Active development is centered around BIND and DHCP.

And yeah, there are probably still people who use INN. I still use rmail to read mail. I've heard there are still people who use pcmail/vmail. :)

And I still use bin/mail for reading some of my email (both ways, uphill)

There are? Cool! I had fun writing them.

Hmm, I wonder if they know that it'll be off by a day after Feb 28th, 2100? (I didn't check for div 100/400)

I still run a PCMAIL server on Frobmob, the same one that i patched into being useable back when i was at FTP. I use a client grafted into uEmacs, as well as a shim layer i built to present the repository via a web interface. It's great for Elbows, especially the way it can maintain a sliding window of current posts, and auto-expire the old crap.

My suspicion is that at this point, i'm the sole PCmail survivor.

Yay for new job, and even more Yay for good pay. Cool beans for not having to commute to work too! Put the extra cash you would have paid for gas into a fund for something special.

Nice! Public 501(c)3 charity that pays like a for-profit organization.

Congrats!

Also, if you do want a place to work, I have a big ol' office in Central Square and it's just me, though we do have some visitors every now and then from headquarters. Anyway, if you wanted to work in a pretty nice office with all the Belmont Springs water you could possibly drink, in the heart of Central Square, ping me.
