Feb. 6th, 2009 06:59 pmIn other news, I just took possession of a Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS. For about $100 more than a refurbished 400D with kit lens, or $50 more than a refurb 400D body with refurb Image Stabilization lens, I got a new 1000D (sold only as a kit, with the IS lens). I have no objection to refurbs, and have bought plenty of other refurb items, but the 1000D has a few other advantages over the 400D/XTi:
+ Live View
+ auto ISO
+ ISO in viewfinder
+ high ISO noise reduction
+ much better battery
+ 54 grams lighter
+ SD vs. Compact Flash (smaller, cheaper, and even my netbook can read it)
- 7 point autofocus, versus 9 point
- no IR shutter release (not that I have any kind of remote at the moment)
c1 knows I'm going to outgrow it, but I have to grow into it first. Gonna be fun.

the 1000D sounds like a good camera...
and remember, friends don't let friends buy EF-S lenses, except the 10-22 ultra wide angle :>

Date: 2009-02-07 04:15 am (UTC)One quick suggestion is to take the EF-S lens and make it go away. Someday, you'll get a full-sized sensor camera, and that lens (with it's protruberance on the back end) will be a liability to the mirror. You'll only hit the trigger once before it goes back to Canon.

Date: 2009-02-08 06:43 pm (UTC)you're going to find that there are a few lenses that do a bunch of thinks "OK" -- your kit lens is one of those, and then there are a few lenses that do one thing "WOW!" and other things not at all. these are the lenses you're going to spend your money on, and they'll mostly all be down the road.
